In first place, you have the option to visit www.login.live.com and from there you can just enter your proper credential to log in. First, you can enter your Outlook or Hotmail account since any of the two will do.

After entering your account, the platform will verify the status of such account and its validation. When the account is verify valid, the platform will ask you for your password. If you insert an incorrect or invalid account, the system will not show the screen requiring the password.

In the case you are using a device of our own, you can check the “Keep me signed in” option and the system will save your credentials and allow a faster signing in procedure. On the other hand, if you are using a shared device we do not recommend to select this option.

To do so, click in the button “Create one!” and the process of getting your new account will begin. Adding new contacts in Outlook or Hotmail

Now that we are in Outlook´s home screen and we have created our new account, in order to use the service and send emails we can start to add contacts. To carry out this adding process, the first thing we are going to do is spot the little icons menu placed at the very left of the screen, right next to the folder panel.

In this icons menu spotted previously there are five buttons or functions to use: “Mail”, “Calendar”, “People”, “Photos” and “Tasks”. In accordance to the process of adding contacts we want to start, we will click in the “People” option, being placed exactly in the middle of the icons menu.

In this way, another browser tab or window will be opened with options referring to people and contacts to send messages, as well as the possibilities to manage them.

In so, the layout is divided into three main areas: a folder panel at the left where default and customizable folders are shown, the contact list in the middle that included the added contacts, as well as the contact´s detail panel placed at the right, which shows information about the selected contact on the contact list.

After we have typed in all the information regarding the contact, the only thing left to is clicking on “Create” to finish the adding process and the contact will be available to send messages. In case you have doubts about the entered information or you want to stop the adding process, you just have to click on the “Discard” option.

Now that we have our contact added many options are possible, such as sending an email, start a chat and edit it in case we want to change information. In the same way, all of these processes can be done from the contact´s details panel by selecting the contact to manage, as well as the option bar enabled on top of the contact list, although we will address this tool in the next section.

Managing and deleting contacts from Outlook or Hotmail

Now that we know how to add contacts, the next thing we are going to do is to manage such contacts, in order to edit, delete, classify, restore, import, export and clean up options, as well as more actions you can do to customize your email platform at choice.

To do so, we will use the option bar enabled at the top of the contact list, including all the options we have called previously. To highlight, all the actions performed from the option bar will have effect on a selected contact or group of contacts.

The next action available in the option bar to perform is “Delete”, which removes a contact or group of selected contacts from the lists. When we click on such option, a warning window will appear requiring confirmation to delete the selected contact.

The third option is regarding adding contacts to favorites, being these contacts included in the default folder of the same name that you can use to have the contact you use the most at first hand. To do it, just click in the option “Add to favorites”.

Regarding the last general preference available in the option bar, we have the “Manage” button to administrate contacts in every way you need. For example, you can restore deleted contacts in case you want to recover them due to accidental removing, as well as you can import and export contacts with CSV files generated from and to other platforms as Gmail or Yahoo!.

Now that you are logged in on Outlook and the platform shows you your home screen, in order to locate notebook functions and others you have to click on the applications icon, which is located at the top left corner of the screen, right above the navigation panel.

Creating a new notebook with customizable name is easy; just click on the “+New” option and a special window will be opened for you to type the new notebook´s name. Being in the recently created notebook, the next logical thing to do is starting using it with the wide set of possibilities offered by OneNote Online through Microsoft´s Outlook platform.

First of all, the platform gets loaded showing three main panels or spaces in the layout; at the left the notebook panel where all of your created notebooks are displayed, at the center the detailed panel where you can see and add new sections and pages into the selected notebook, as well as the writing panel placed at the right, from where you can add and modify individual notes.

Continuing, for you to hide and show the notebook panel you can click in the “Notebook list” button, and from this panel you can access your stock and created notebooks to add and modify sections and notes. Also, from this panel at the bottom you can access the option “More notebooks”, for you to create new notebooks and manage them.

Moving to the detailed panel at the center, from this space in the platform you can see the sections and pages added, as well as the possibility to create and delete them easily.

For example, sections are useful to organize notes by criteria and give general order to the notebook platform. So, to create a new section you can click in the “+Section” button at the button of the detailed panel, appearing a pop-up window allowing you to enter the name of it. Then, click in “OK” and the new section of the notebook you are will be created.

Having been created the new section, in this case called “Work Notes” as some type of folder specially created for notes related with working matters, now we can start creating pages or notes to keep important information at first hand.

To do so, click in the option “+Page” at the right button of the detailed panel. By default, a note called “Untitled Page” is available just to modify and be customized.

In details, you can change the name of the default page or one created by you by just clicking or pressing Enter in the writing panel at the right, specifically in the space bar above the date and time information. In this case we will write “Next Week Meeting” and automatically such name will be added to identify the page or note.

In case you want to delete created sections and notes, you can do it easily using this method: just click with the right button of your mouse and a little menu will be shown, where you only have to click in the “Delete” option, working this method with sections and pages.

Modifying created notes and pages in OneNote easily

We know now how to create sections and new pages with proper recognizable names and information, however, in this part of the tutorial we will be showing you how to modify created notes in an easy way.

In order to modify notes and pages you have created you have access to an option panel previously shown, placed at the top of the layout with options like “File”, “Home”, “Insert”, “Draw”, “View” and “Print”, having all of them different functions.

When you get logged in on Outlook after entering your credentials correctly, your home page will appear with your messages and main folders, as well as some ads, news and other information on the screen.

To do so, the pop-up window related to the full settings in Outlook is permanently showing two button s at the top right of such window, allowing you to perform the saving or discarding action. For example, in the case you want to save and apply all the changes you have made, you just have to click on the “Save” button, and therefore all modifications will be instantly applied.

On the other hand, if you are making changes that later you are not sure to apply because you do not know exactly what you change or because simply there was a change of opinion, you can cancel the whole changing of configuration process by clicking in the “Discard” button.

Automatically, all the changes you made in first instance will be deleted and the platform will remain the same as you left it in first place. To return to the Outlook platform and inbox you just have to click on the “X” icon located at the top right.

Along with Jurvetson´s investment, the two founders request a bank loan for 100.000 dollars, in order to have financial and creative control on the company that was about to be created.

Releasing Hotmail and changing email service

A year later; on the 4th of July, 1996 and the day the United States celebrates its independence, Hotmail was released as an online service through the web, a date that was not chosen by coincidence but to symbolize freedom.

Regarding the name “Hotmail”, an exact reason Bhatia and Smith chose it has not been published yet, but anecdotally the first logo had a selective use of capital letters; being written “HoTMaiL” as some type of acronym referring to “HTML” as the computer language to write web sites.

Thanks to Bathia and Smith and their idea that later on became Hotmail, internet users had the opportunity to start using and enjoying email as a web platform, only requiring a computer, a web browser and a capable connection, without the need of using a paid software that had to be installed. A few months later, Hotmail already had a million users; a huge number at the time.

Hotmail and the purchase by Microsoft

On December of 1996, only four months Hotmail was released the service already had at least a half million users, and that was only the tip of the iceberg. In detail, Bhatia realized about the huge influence emails could have on marketing and business strategies, since every message from his platform could act as advertising service.

Because of this exponential growth, Bill Gates; founder of Microsoft showed interest on Hotmail and him and Bhatia had a meeting in 1997, a time where Hotmail had more than six million users and counting.

In details, Gates wanted to buy Hotmail completely or at least the most part, so Bhatia asked him for 500 million dollars to buy the entire platform. At the end, the deal was closed at 400 million dollars; an amount that at that time was huge and surpass any expectations. Like this, Microsoft got almost three million shares of Hotmail and by December, 1997 the whole company.

Regardless Microsoft acquired Hotmail, the big company did not change its name and carried on using the brand as people knew it; it just add MSN to call it MSN Hotmail. Of course, Hotmail was integrated into other Microsoft services such as MSN Messenger, Expedia, CarPoint, and others, so users could use their same Hotmail address to use them any time.

Also, Microsoft added the possibility to open new Hotmail account in different languages, such as Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and many more.

And of course, since Hotmail was bought by Microsoft with the pass of time the email service was changed, in terms of design, functioning and other aspects, changing its initial logo and being more suitable to Microsoft´s layout in its services at the time. However, Hotmail´s main purpose and idea never changed.

Security issues in Hotmail

Hotmail was far from being a perfect service, since many times during its history it was attacked by hackers, affecting millions of users and their accounts´ privacy by finding flaws in the platform. For example, in the year of 2000 users received mail telling them to close their account because the system was about to fall, since there were too many users to handle.

In 2004, Google released its own email service to compete directly with Hotmail, offering a more intuitive layout, more storage capacity and an easier attachment process of documents and images, since it was based on the cloud from the beginning.

In 2011, when Hotmail was changed to Windows Live Hotmail, the newest platform gave plenty of troubles to millions of users, when they realized they lost mails and messages saved for years due to its importance, what brought a lot of complains and it was enough reason for many users to change email service provider.

Hotmail and its modern evolution

In the year of 2005, Microsoft renewed all of its services by integrating them into one platform; Windows Live, so Hotmail was now called Windows Live Hotmail, being the official released on May, 7 of 2005, giving the possibility to all users to migrate into the new and better platform.

Nevertheless, the biggest breakthrough so far in relation to Hotmail and its evolution was carried out in 2103, when all Hotmail accounts were migrated to a new platform called Outlook; being the way Microsoft ‘mail platform is known today, removing the Hotmail brand after almost fifteen years of using it.

In this case, all Hotmail accounts were migrated automatically and the layout and design was more intuitive, corresponding to the Metro interface used on Windows 8 at the time. Also, integration with other Microsoft services was improved, giving the chance to use Office, Skype, XBOX, OneDrive and other platforms in just one place, being a way to still competing with Gmail.
